After nine years in the world of GNOME 2, our community is now moving one step further with the availability of the first GNOME 3 release. We're writing an important new line in the history of our project.

It's hard to ignore the feelings this event creates.

I remember the long discussion Lucas and I had about the future of GNOME, in front of his hotel at FOSDEM 2008.
I remember how, at GUADEC 2008 in Istanbul, the release team discussed the idea of finally doing GNOME 3.
I remember the Boston hackfest in October 2008, and all the ideas that were generated there.
I remember writing the first draft of our plan for GNOME 3.0, late at night at the end of March 2009, while being hosted by Christophe.
I remember meeting with as many teams as possible for two days at GUADEC 2010 in the Hague, to decide if we should delay the release.
And I obviously remember the Bangalore Hackfest we did last week to work on the final details on the release.

I love our project and what we achieved. You will love it too!

Yes it is truly marvelous what you have achieved. There's still much to be done i suppose, lots of applications to go over and re-polish, but this new "design first" approach you have managed to implement gives me hope of a truly good linux desktop. One that feels coherent and thought through. One that can compete not only with Windows XP and maybe Windows 7 but also with MacOSX.

I am sure it's going to be a success, and also a reward for the hard work of so many people. Thanks all for bringing this 'magnificent' piece of work to the general public. I'm happy now that we have a 'restart' button!

Everyone on GNOME Project should be proud, despite of what many say (even sometimes me)! I'm going off to test a 1.0.0 spin by Frederic and finish lobotomizing my PS3...

Definitely congrats and big kudos as well as thanks goes to you for your graeat wonderful achievement on Gnome 3. Your talks at Gnome.Asia was wonderful and lovely. Your really an awesome person many folks should learn and be like.

congratulations to the whole GNOME community for such a relentless work! This release is giving a new basis to the community, a new way to think. GNOME strived hard to innovate, and these efforts are now rewarded. We're all GNOME 3 ;-)

I can't understand why did you remove the basic options which are standard on popular desktops. Why I can't change my fonts easily and have to install some third party twicker? This release is even worse than KDE4.0. I remember promises you won't do such mistake, but you did even worse. KDE at least didn't change the end user experience so much. Gnome shell is hardly usable on desktops. Gnome2 was lacking some options and you go even further with Gnome3, because you cut off the basic stuff. Why do you consider everyone wants to use default fonts settings? Maybe you're not aware of this, but not everyone has exactly the same screen and what's more important people know better what fonts settings they want to use. Why do I have to move my mouse from one side to another just to launch application? There are many more things which makes this unusable for me. I wouldn't be surprised if gnomies will use Unity or switch to XFCE.

Please stop drinking the kool-aid collectively. It doesn't make GNOME3 more appealing. There are literally no words for how useless this piece of technology is. Hopefully someone will fork GNOME 2.x so that we don't have to live with this fascist lunacy; in the meantime I welcome our XFCE overlords. As Linus once said: you make a desktop environment for idiots, only idiots will use it.

Have you lot read the last paragraph over at http://www.exde.org ? Might shed some light into those weaker minds that think moving the mouse all over the screen would somehow save productivity. Also yea make 3D acceleration mandatory. Yep, that's gonna end up well. Oh right, you have the fallback mode.. yep that's working well too. What are you saying? GNOME-panel will still be maintained? Who are you kidding? GNOME-panel will just ride into oblivion sunset, along with GNOME 2.x (unless someone has the sanity to fork it).

You have all that volunteer man-power and you're using their interest to excuse a bad technical decision, that is, throwing out the window all experience gained with a currently working environment, all in the pursuit of some questionable usability nirvana.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for improvement, but I seriously object to two things:

1. The mentality that once something is done, it's dead. NO, IT'S JUST DONE. Most software projects should aim at BEING DONE SOMEDAY, at least the parts others have to rely upon. Common sense tells me that's very important - to not fuck up other people's work (because they rely on yours). Some concept you lot haven't learned yet.

2. The way GNOME has chosen to release shell. Make a new point zero release and rush a half-baked idea with a half-baked implementation. And make it mandatory! Why would it be so difficult to maintain the current, working, environment for the MILIONS of current users, and give the radically new stuff as an option for the adventurous? Don't even start with fallback mode. It's there for one reason: because not everyone has an goood video card. Does it mimic GNOME 2.x? Don't get me started.

And what's with the MANDATORY stuff anyway? Granted, you need users to test your `new greatest` work, but people have been on this road before. It's not going to end well, you know?

And all this would be moot, though, if GNOME tried to finish something. But can Gnome 2.x be considered `done`? Nope, it was never written with that in mind. There are piles of bugs that will NEVER get a fix, because in the minds of those developers GNOME 2.x is not mature, but deprecated. And that's how some people move `forward`.

Reading that short article over at http://www.jwz.org/doc/cadt.html might show exactly how GNOME is maintained. Literally nothing more needs to be said on the subject. And this was 2003.

GNOME: This shell crap will blow up in your face. In a few hours your new tablet-like-interface went from wow to boring (and this to my gf who's not so skilled with computers). You literally can't get any work done properly. Give it a few years to sink, you'll understand what you've done when you'll become irrelevant. `New and improved` doesn't equal moving forward. You lot are about to learn a tough lesson.

GNOME 3 parties? Give me a fucking break.
