smk: I didn't know about this XEP. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to do this with a rb plugin. I kind of agree that this is abusing the status usage (although I don't think it's plain wrong), which is why I'm not using this plugin all the time ;-)

Regarding the installation issue, you should either have gossip.rb-plugin and gossip.py in
~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/plugins/, OR gossip.rb-plugin and __init__.py in ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/plugins/gossip.

If you're putting it in it's own directory (which is generally better), it MUST to be called __init__.py, so that Python knows it should act as a module.

I don't think it's wrong. Most people using the MSN protocol just display some random stuff in their own status field. There's theorical usage... and how it is used in the "real" world.

Second problem with your code is... that the idea is plain wrong.

Status is there to tell people why are you absent or busy, when you will be back etc.

For publishing information on what are you listening to is XEP-0118 - www.xmpp.org/extensions/x... - this way only the interested ones are flooded with this frequently changing information.

Maybe I did something wrong, but if I followed you instructions, the plugin would not load. However, by extracting the content into the given folder, and renaming init.py to gossip.py solved the problem...

One problem with your code. You use dbus_bindings which is the non-public, subject to change, lowlevel API. (It changed to _dbus_bindings in the latest version to drive home that point even more). You can do the same thing by replacing except dbus_bindings.DBusException with dbus.DBusException
