With regards your comment about users being sad that some bug wasn't fixed yet; Perhaps these blog posts / comments etc... should get tracked using some kind of social bookmarking tool. Using this, gnome developers and advocates can develop a practice of storing these type of comments somewhere centralized and these issues can be dealt with more easily.

I also like the idea of an Idea Storm for gnome.

Well, maybe I did. I can perfectly well understand why you would be upset when people say "Gnome is useless" without saying why they think so. I just wanted to take the opportunity to offer some, in my mind at least, constructive criticism of Gnome. Whether I succeeeded at that I leave up to you and whoever else reads this.

And for the record, I'm happy that Gnome exists even though I don't use it myself. I'm a firm believer in that the competition between Gnome and KDE makes both environments better for their respective users (and yes, I can see quite a few problems that need adressing in KDE as well. Unfortunately, I'm just a user so I am not as able to contribute as I would like).

Jonas: you missed my point. It's perfectly fine that you don't care about GNOME. But there's a difference between not caring (like you do) and replying to a news about the latest version of GNOME to say that it's horrible for this reason or that one (like some comments I've read).

I don't expect everybody to care about GNOME, but there's a difference between not caring about GNOME and making some misinformed comments about it to say that it's a bad project. I mean, if I don't care about something, I just don't comment on it :-)

(I'm not going to reply to each of the points you've listed, since that was not the subject of this post and I don't think that you were expecting a reply on this)

I'm sure some people could consider my viewpoints of gnome to fall under the "irrational hatred of gnome" category...it's decent, but just not for me. That being said, let me list a few reasons why I am firmly in the KDE camp (and I'm sure you've heard them all a thousand times...).

1. It doesn't feel (subjective, I know) like a coherent environment. The components of KDE, Windows, and MacOS X are more integrated with one another while Gnome feels like it's a bit of more or less haphazardly chosen programs that happens to be written using the gnome and/or gtk frameworks.
2. I don't like the "simplicity above all" credo. While making things simple for first-time users is laudable, please add something like "I know what I'm doing. Now, let me adjust the more advanced options without having to use the gconf editor".
3. And while on the subject of gconf, I don't like gconf AT ALL. If I wanted a registry, I would use windows.
4. Why does the best Gnome apps have to rely on Mono (i.e. Banshee, Tomboy)? In my experience, Mono is slow at the best of times. And it certainly feels like bloat, especially if you only need/want one program that requires the mono runtime libs. YMMV.
5. KDE/Qt apps look horribly out of place in Gnome, while the reverse is not the case. Okay, they still look slightly out of place but not to the same extent. Gtk/gnome apps are perfectly happy in using my KDE style(s) and if it wasn't for the layout of the menus and the fileselector it would be easy to mistake the app for a KDE native one.
6. The fileselector. It's a nightmare IMO, mainly because the different options are well, scattered about, and that you can not AFAIK customize it to your needs. I.e. I want to have thumbnails within the fileselector instead of a sidepanel since it gives a better overview when/if you're not sure of the filename.
7. Nautilus. I can't quite put my finger on why it bugs me, but it feels underpowered. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Konqueror...which I tend to use even when in a Gnome environment.

That's what I can think of on top of my head. Does that mean Gnome is useless? Or that KDE is better for everyone? Certainly not. It's just the reasons why *I* don't particularly care for Gnome.
