The way Maemo works now is rather nice, so I do not think they will remove all current code like that. It will be an example of a mixed GNOME/Qt system for some releases.

The howto at #2 works fine. I just removed whole of GNOME and replaced it with KDE within 30 minutes.

"Usability has no dependence on any specific toolkit." Actually, it sort of definitely has, because it (like nothing that matters) has nothing to do with technology.

The toolkit and the default languages used impose certain mindset, which correlates quite heavily with the design & development process. Furthermore, Non-KDE and Qt developer base overlap quite heavily. As we all know, KDE has got absolutely horrible usability. Likely those Qt folks will bring their brainfarts all over that mobile device GUI, ruining it entirely.

Nokia can do whatever they wish and have their long range plans. My long range plan is to stay very very far away from their products.

I agree with you Leo S, rawsausage definitely has a broken brain.

Vincent, it may be mostly gnome now but don't let that fool you, the long term plan is to be mostly QT. They are just trying not to break any gnome fanboy hearts by deprecating it slowly.

mathew: Maemo is definitely GNOME-based at the moment. It's using way more than just GTK+ and pango (look at the link in the post). Also, it's a platform that will grow, as others pointed out, with Qt joining the gang.

I had been hoping that Nokia would some day release an internet tablet (with 3G data) with high usability gui environment. If there will be Qt, bleh. There went usability. Back to considering iPhone/HTC Diamond etc.

Highly misleading to say that the N8x0 systems are using GNOME.

No, they're using Maemo, which happens to use some of the same libraries as GNOME.

That's like saying that Xfce is using GNOME because it uses GTK+ and Pango...

Hmm, Michael was quicker, but I'd also like to mention that the next software version (Fremantle) for the Nokia Internet Tablet Series will have community-supported Qt libraries, and its predecessor (Harmattan) will have officially supported Qt libraries.

The strike started about 30min before my flight to Stockholm was due to depart. This meant hours of delays as the pilots had to do all the unloading and loading of luggage.

In the end we got to Stockholm where I had to stay overnight as the delays made me miss the Helsinki plane...
