Great to see people working on innovating with usability! Reading this i'd like to share an insight: you can't hack usability that is you can't use customization as an excuse for things.
(This coming after having to switch to ubuntu from opensuse and having to muck around to get the cool start menu back and ending up with a half arsed solution that misses important features, like a shutdown button!)

I hope that the 'access to documents' would not try to be too smart for itself and still have a sane and human-readable and human-manageable folder structure on the filesystem - I would not want to have to enter cryptic GUID folder names in some old app or be unable to have a remote Solaris server ssh in and backup away a folder where I keep all project documentation, for example. POSIX is there for a reason.

I hope you started to remove duplication from the desktop? That would be fabulous! I always disliked the way an application's icon gets splattered all over the desktop; on the Application menu, in the window list, in the notification area.

I'd rather have a unified indicator per application, showing whether it is launched or not, for notification and also to launch the application.

"thinking about window management, workspaces, applets"

I use window-picker-applet on my machines. The title belongs in the top panel, window menu bars and window controls need to be merged. NOTHING belongs on the bottom, and until people allow me to put status bars up where I'm looking, I'll leave them all turned off.
